Wilted

A coworker and friend of mine ran the MO Cowbell marathon today. I met him at 8 miles and ran with him for a bit. He seemed to be doing well. The fact that we talked the whole time indicated he wasn't pushing too hard. He was just ahead of pace for running a 3:40, which was his goal.

I saw him again at 19 and things weren't so pretty. The early clouds had dissipated and the temperature had come up ten degrees (to high 60's). He was still moving OK, but it was obvious that the heat was getting to him. He was just over 3:40 pace.

Given the conditions (temps continued into the 70's over the next hour), he held it together fairly well and managed 3:48. Still a decent finish, but not what he was hoping for. It wasn't a silly hope, either, he has the fitness to run a 3:40; today just wasn't the day.

It's a good lesson for me going into Rock Bridge next weekend. Forecasts a week out are always suspect, but it looks like we'll get some warm weather next weekend. I'll need to measure my effort well to avoid wilting in the final hour.
