Eric Buckley: I left grad school in 1989 to pursue a pro cycling career. That sort of worked out, but still left me needing another job. Since it fit well with my cycling training, I taught Computer Science courses for three years at Mount Union College in Alliance, OH. I loved it.

After retiring from semi-pro racing, I worked a few years as a hardware-level programmer before getting interested in large databases. Data design has been my passion for the last 20 years and I like my job very much. That said, I have always had it in my head that I want to return to teaching in the later part of my career. Well, that part of my career is coming fairly soon, so I'm returning to Grad School to finish my PhD.

Balancing that with a full time job and a family will surely be no easier than what I faced 25 years ago, but I have changed a lot. I've learned what things matter to me and what things I can let go of. I'm eager to get on with this journey. My blog simply serves as my way of keeping myself on course. I put it out publicly because I've found that to be a motivator for me. If others enjoy it, so much the better.
